Watch the Fretboard Mastery System online guitar lesson by Fareed Haque from Modal Improv Survival Guide

To learn how to play scales and their modes on the guitar I suggest the following approach. Keep in mind that there are any number of systems and methods out there that will show you how to finger and learn different scale patterns. The difference here is that this approach doesn't force you to think of scales in ‘my’ way or someone else’s way, as most systems do – This approach comes from the nature of the guitar itself and will [hopefully!] allow you to explore scale fingerings in your own way.

We will learn major scales in three ways:

Two Octave Scales; From low E to High E strings. This is the most organic and natural way to play scales on the guitar.

One Octave Scales; from E,A, D and G strings. This next step breaks the fingerboard into smaller, more useful and melodic bits.

‘Perpetual Motion’ key changing excercises; The last step is a sort of controlled improvisation. Jam on a mode evenly and steadily wthout stopping, playing notes in any order you wish, then changing keys without shifting or changing ideas.

These three steps followed carefully and thoroughly will guarantee a complete mastery of the fingerboard given time, and diligent, intelligent practice. ...OR YOUR MONEY BACK!!
