Watch the Jazz Rock Workshop online guitar lesson by Fareed Haque from Jazz Rock Workshop
The music of the Americas and much of the folk music from around the world is based around pentatonic scales. In addition, much of modern jazz and fusion music is based around the application of pentatonic principles to harmony and melody and improvisation.
Pentatonics are seen as a way to connect the modern to the blues, the new to the folkloric, the innovative to the traditional. Many of the compositions and improvisations of Joe Henderson, Wayne Shorter, Chick Corea, John McLaughlin, Jan Hammer, Al DiMeola, John Scofield, Pat Metheny, Pat Martino and many, many others use the principles presented here.
I hope and pray that you can take these ideas and concepts to new and exciting places! Anything, even music that does not change and grow, will die. An old Asian saying says that the stiff, unyielding tree is usually dead. Tradition is NOT conservative. A conservative artist tries to keep art from changing and in doing so KILLS it, suffocates it, imprisons it. The traditional artist knows history and the past and allows art to reflect the past thru growth and change for themselves and for the future.
Don't be afraid to change the music!
