Watch the Yardbird Suite online guitar lesson by Mimi Fox from Jazz Performance
I suppose I have said this a million times to my students over the years: it NEVER sounds bad to play the blues! The common parent to both rock and jazz, the blues forms the foundation of much of our pop music, regardless of genre. I also feel strongly that the best jazz guitarists use the blues scale liberally. Think: Wes, Grant Green, Pat Martino, Kenny Burrell, GeorgeBenson, Russell Malone, etc. etc. Case closed! Study where I am using the blues lines here and try to put them into whatever songs you are working on. It will give an earthy quality to your solos that will enhance the other lines you are doing.
