Many students shy away from this important technique of solo development because they are afraid they will sound corny or "stupid" the reverse is true! Playing a repeating phrase and milking it for all it's worth will make you sound cool and it takes intelligence to learn how to develop a motif by not only repeating it, but varying it later on by displacing the rhythm of the phrase, or perhaps changing a note or two while keeping the basic shape of the line. This technique can best be learned by transcribing solos of masters and seeing/hearing how they do it.
