Watch the Pack of Lies online guitar lesson by Mimi Fox from Jazz Performance
One of my favorite exponents of repeating motifs was Wes Montgomery. Wes would take a riff, repeat it, displace the rhythm of it, use it later in the same solo over a different chord, etc. And it always sounded exciting and fresh. Listen to Wes's solos on "S. O. S. " and "Cariba" from the recording "Full House" and you'll see what I mean. A great way to start hearing this idea is to transcribe solos of your favorite players. It's fun to work up to playing along with the recording.
