Watch the Passing Diminished online guitar lesson by Frank Potenza from Jazz Harmony Handbook

We return to the use of passing diminished chords, this time in a chord sequence featuring an ascending chromatic bass line that's a classic reharmonization of the A section of "Rhythm Changes". Then, in the second half of bar 6, we discover another passing diminished chord (E Dim7) to add new color and once again, move our bass line up chromatically. These are the more advanced options that were referred to earlier. This version includes a turnaround in the final A section that really heightens the sense of tension by avoiding the tonic until we return to the top of the form again.
