Watch the Sonora Spring: Verse 1 online guitar lesson by John Jorgenson from Gypsy Jazz Journeys: Sonora Spring
Here we go with the first phrase of the verse, and it actually starts with the same shape as the rhythm guitar chords, the G6 we went over, and I kind of sweep across all the strings. Sweeping being when you drag your pick across the strings. I stop on my melody note, which is an E on the B string. You kind of "get off" of each note too - don't let them ring. If you do, it doesn't let the E shine through, and it's not the sound we're looking for. The sweep is really just a ramp up for the E.
This pushes me onto the melody phrase, and the rest of it is all around a G6 chord, starting on the 6th with the sweep, then the 5th, 3rd, to the root, 6th, and then the 5th. I could have played the open D string to hit the final 5th, but you can't do anything with it if it's open, and I want to add vibrato. This keeps the melody lively and moving along.
