Watch the Melody online guitar lesson by Mimi Fox from Graduated Solos
Melody - there really is nothing that defines a song more than the melody and great melodies make great songs. This is why the Beatles music remains so widely played and why George Gershwin remains a musical icon many years after his death. As an improvisor, one is being asked to spontaneously compose great melodies on the spot...a tall order! Fortunately we are aided by the fact that we are soloing over songs that already have a great melody written. Therefore, all the different ways we can expand/expound upon the basic melody, the richer our solos become. Transcribing solos by master artists is another way to build strong solos. I have transcribed hundreds of solos by artists such as Wes Montgomery, Joe Pass, Pat Martino, John Coltrane, McCoy Tyner, Charlie Parker, etc., and the time spent has been well worth the effort.
