Watch the Open Strings online guitar lesson by Mimi Fox from Flying Solo
When I first started playing jazz, various teachers told me not to play open strings because it sounded "square"! Ha! Were they ever wrong! If you start to absorb the ideas I am playing here you will add so much color and beauty to your playing and yet another guitaristic concept that far from sounding "square", will be quite cool. Used as pedal points, open strings provide a bottom and flesh out your sound. Integrated into the body of a chord they add interest and sophistication. I recommend you persue this with persistence, it will be well worth your time.
