Watch the Odd Meters online guitar lesson by Mimi Fox from Flying Solo
It's really important as a musician to become your own drummer! I am lucky in that drums was my first instrument and I still play when I can. But even non-drummers must learn to think like a drummer. Internalizing the groove, the time-feel, the meter, until it becomes second nature. If you have the opportunity to hear a great group at a live performance, try to zero in on the drummer for a few tunes and just listen to what they are able to create. It's hard to tune out the soloist in this instance, but it's a great way to gain insight into what is the pulse of the music. Some of my favorite drummers are: Jeff "Tain" Watts, Billy Hart, Brian Blade, and the late great Elvin Jones. They are all very different and have very different approaches to playing, but all of them are masters and all of them have something to teach us.
