Watch the Standard Integrated Solo online guitar lesson by Mimi Fox from Flying Solo
Once you start memorizing tunes it is much easier to make compelling solos. This is because the song becomes a part of you in a more complete way when you are freed from looking at a chart. This in turn allows you to take more chances with the music... which makes the solo sound more exciting. Start by memorizing two or four bars at a time. Then maybe an entire section. Pretty soon you will get good at memorizing songs. Set goals for yourself of one song a week. In a year, this would give you over 50 songs!
