Watch the Standard Integrated Solo online guitar lesson by Mimi Fox from Flying Solo
One thing that stymies guitarists sometimes is that they are worried about sounding corny, or un-hip by playing simple riffs or melodic motifs. This is a mistake! Sometimes a simple little lick can be used in new ways that will open up new avenues of adventure. Simple ideas also give you a chance to develop more complex ideas. They also draw the audience into the music and prepare them for more intricate lines. Don't be afraid of sounding silly! Repeating licks also ground the music and keep it from getting too dense and unconnected.
