Watch the Creative Process online guitar lesson by Mimi Fox from Flying Solo
The thing I love most about jazz, and about solo guitar in particular is the freedom it allows me as an artist. I can take a song that has been played to death and flesh it out, mine it, and suddenly it comes alive. The trick? You must bring all of yourself to the table, your knowledge of harmony/scales/rhythms/guitar tecniques/etc. But also your spirit! Again, it's important to tape yourself and try out different ideas. Take a ballad and see what it sounds like if you play it in 3/4 time as a waltz, or re-harmonize the bridge and see where that takes you. Take a burning be-bop tune and re-imagine it with a gospel feel. The only imperative is you must keep an open mind and keep exploring.
