Watch the La Cucaracha online guitar lesson by James Hogan from 50 Jazz Rock Licks You MUST Know

It seems that most of my favorite fusion guitarists have worked with Chick Corea at some point. John McLaughlin, Bill Connors, Al Di Meola, Scott Henderson, Carlos Rios, Frank Gambale and Mike Miller all spring to mind.

Chick and John McLaughlin in particular worked together with Miles Davis’ group on two of the very 1st albums to fuse jazz and rock. (In A Silent Way, Bitch’s Brew) After that, they both became dominant figures in jazz rock through the enormous success of their own groups respectively.

It’s fair to say that Chick Corea has evolved into one of the most influential pianists and bandleaders in jazz history. Additionally, Chick is arguably still the most important living keyboardist in jazz fusion today.

This lick is one I pulled from the tune "King Cockroach" which is featured on Chick’s first Elektric Band album. The lick is played over a B Maj7 chord. Although, Chick is outlining D#minor pentatonic throughout the lick. In relation to Bmaj7 the D#min pentatonic scale outlines the intervals (3 - 5- 13 - 7 - 9) of the chord. Sneaky! "
