The late great Hiram Bullock was known by many as the "barefoot guitarist" from the early years of The David Letterman Show. Unfortunately, a lot of people don’t realize that in addition to playing in Letterman’s 1st house band, Hiram was a fantastic fusion guitarist and highly demanded sideman back in the mid 1980’s. Hiram’s playing on some of the Jaco Pastorious bootleg albums and his sideman work with Steely Dan, David Sanborn and Bob James is among his best.

This lick is a "repeater" type of lick based in E minor. Hiram often took traditional blues lick shapes and moved them to different places in order to outline chord extensions. That’s exactly what’s going on here!
