Watch the Cosmic Rain online guitar lesson by James Hogan from 50 Jazz Rock Licks You MUST Know

While I absolutely love Al Di Meola’s playing and consider him one of my biggest early influences, I have to say that in hindsight Bill Connors may just be my favorite Return To Forever guitarist. His fiery and organic playing on the "Hymn Of the Seventh Galaxy" album should be investigated by any aspiring fusion guitarist.

This lick which was taken from a live bootleg of "After The Cosmic Rain" employs both the Phrygian (1- b2 - b3 - 4 - 5 - b6 - b7) and Phrygian Dominant (1 - b2 - 3 - 4 - 5 - b6 - b7) scales. The Phrygian Dominant Scale aka "Spanish Phrygian" in particular lends an exotic vibe to the ending of this lick. It’s a scale that occurs commonly in Jewish, Greek, Turkish, Arab, Persian, and Flamenco music. And of course, fusion."
