Watch the The Other Carlos online guitar lesson by James Hogan from 50 Jazz Rock Licks You MUST Know

Carlos Rios is one of the most under appreciated guitarists in all of jazz rock. His work on the first Chick Corea Elektric Band album, along with his sideman work with Tom Scott, and especially with Gino Vanelli is required listening for any fan of this genre. Time, tone, feel, chops, Carlos has it all. As is evidenced in his brilliant solo on Gino Vanelli’s classic 1978 jazz rock cut "Brother To Brother."

According to Carlos he actually got the Gino Vanelli gig by mistake. Carlos had loaned a friend one of Gino’s records and the friend called Carlos’ house to ask him when he wanted the record back. Carlos’ mother answered the phone an mistakingly relayed to Carlos that "Gino Vanelli called and said something about a record!" Carlos called his friend and teacher Larry Carlton and got Gino’s number immediately. It just so happened that Gino was looking for a guitarist for the "Brother To Brother album." The rest as they say is history!

This ii-V-I lick in Gb Major is one of my favorite licks from Brother To Brother. It has some killer descending 5ths and a great feel. I’ve included the tune’s signature lick as well."
