Watch the Sneaky Scotty online guitar lesson by James Hogan from 50 Jazz Rock Licks You MUST Know

This lick is a nod to Scott Henderson’s more recent Jeff Beck inspired playing. Sometime in the early 2000’s Scott switched from humbucker equipped guitars over to "strat" styled guitars with single coil pickups. His tone took on a different flavor and his playing changed quite a bit too. Since then, I’m pretty sure that the vibrato bar hasn’t left his hand! And I jest.

I love how this lick starts out with a fairly stock C minor pentatonic blues lick but quickly derails into an A major triad and then to some wicked Beck inspired bar manipulation around the C half-whole diminished scale. This is a really sneaky approach to adding outside sounds into a phrase and it’s one of my favorite licks. "
