Watch the Dizzy's Gift online guitar lesson by Sheryl Bailey from 50 Essential Bebop Licks You MUST Know
If an alien being came down to earth and asked me "what is the essence of modern jazz?", I would have to tell them about the tritone sub V7. To me, this sound sums up the essence of bebop and what Dizzy Gillespie gave to the world of harmonic innovation. By playing a dominant 7 arpeggio/scale a tritone away, you create the essential dom7 b9#11 sound that permeates the whole history of jazz music. This lick here I attribute to Dizzy, and uses just the triad of the tritone sub. What is fun about this line, is that once you internalize the muscle memory of it, you can play it from either side of the tritone. This is one you can start to incorporate now, especially if you do any funk and blues playing.
