Watch the Bossa Etudes online guitar lesson by Fareed Haque from 1-2-3 Bossa Nova

The bossa nova is like many musical styles in that there are very typical melodic and harmonic elements. In this course we are of course chiefly concerned with the typical harmonic or chordal sequences that make up most bossa accompaniments. To that end, I have put together 6 simple etudes that draw upon the most typical chord progressions; chord progressions that come from some of the most famous bossa nova songs. I will perform each etude with improvised embellishments taken from the embellishments you have been shown in the previous section. I will play loosely and naturally, so there may be a few things thrown in that we haven't covered. But check out the transcriptions to grab whatever phrases, licks, embellishments you like. After each performance I'll break it down a bit, and point out interesting and/or tricky spots. Finally we will jam together. I'll play a phrase or two, and then you jump in and play along. This is so you can really get a chance to lock into the groove and get that essential bossa feeling. This is where you gotta go with the flow - on your mark! Get set! and - chill.
