In this second Level 1 Hammer-Ons & Pull-Offs Workout you'll make use of both hammer-ons and pull-offs that ascend up the neck. Within each set of four bars you'll make a slight fingering adjustment that allows you to work through most every fingering scenario you'll encounter. First you'll rock hammer-ons followed by pull-offs. All the while with a diagonal twist - check it out.
Looking at the first line of four bars that start in the 9th position you're assuming a four finger chromatic vision - 1st finger on the 9th fret, 2nd finger on the 10th fret, 3rd finger on the 11th fret and your 4th finger on the 12th fret - you'll have one of your fingers (except the 1st finger) perform two hammer-ons in a row - I call it "the repeater." It goes like this: The first time around on the high E string the 4th finger will play the 11th and 12th fret hammer-ons off the 1st fret. Then you'll make a diagonal jump to the B string with your 1st finger, 10th fret. Why? Because after that 4-fret stretch you just did to make the 9th-13th fret hammer-on it's actually easier. Plus, it's a fun mind game! Once you make the transition to the B string your 2nd finger is hammering-on from the newly planted 1st finger on the 11th fret thus assuming another four finger chromatic vision with one caveat. This time you'll use your 3rd finger to play the 12th and 13th fret hammer-ons. Finally, the third time you'll diagonally jump your fret hand 1st finger over the the G string 11th fret to start the series of hammer-ons that follow. There you will call upon your 2nd finger to play the first two hammer-ons.
Once you play through this three-string zone with hammer-ons you'll do it all again starting in the 7th position on the high E string, this time you'll use pull-offs. In the end this workout preps you for just about every hammer-on/pull-off instance that will come your way.
