Vibrato - Demonstration is a video guitar lesson presented by Larry Carlton and is sourced from 335 Blues.
Practicing your bends within a scale will help sharpen your intonation - that is, making sure you bend in tune. Another helpful exercise for keeping those bends on pitch is to let a chord ring while you practice. So, play a chord and make sure that your bends reach a pitch that sounds right against it. You'll start to develop an ear for playing bends with good intonation, and your fingers will "learn" how much pressure is needed to hit whole-and half-step bends in tune.
Now let's examine another essential technique for any blues player, vibrato. But before we dive into the exercise and examples I've prepared for you, do a little self-assessment.
Are you happy with your current vibrato technique? What's missing? What do you hear in other players' vibrato that you wish you heard in your own?
Years ago, when I realized that my own vibrato just wasn't happening, I knew it was time to completely overhaul my approach. I was fortunate enough to have someone mentor me, and I now happily pass on those learnings to you. Be patient, it will come!
