Watch the Weepy Guitar online guitar lesson by Jeff McErlain from Soloing the Changes
As I explained in the video, when I run through the chord progression, we can see a very cool descending bass line that goes A-G-F#-F-E. This is digging a little deeper and a very cool line, as you can see as it moves down through the changes. Something like this can really add to your solo can be very effective. Lines like this create very strong melodic ideas and should be exploited as much as possible!
Once again, I had been playing on the song for many years and completely missed this cool descending line as a soloist. It wasn't until I analyzed the chord progression, and wrote it out, that I saw what was going on, understood it, and started using it. Good bass players do these kinds of things all the time. They look for the inner motion of the chords and incorporate that into their bass line.
