Watch the Open Letter online guitar lesson by Jeff McErlain from Soloing the Changes

The A minor pentatonic blues scale (ACDEbEG) is the scale of choice as a great place to start, as it'll work over the whole tune just fine. The first two chords in the progression are Am (ACE) and F7 (FACEb). If we look, we can see the Am blues scale does a great job covering the two chords. The blue note, Eb, contains the b7 of the F7 chord. That's the note to hit on the F7 first. Even if you don't know how to spell all your chords or are 100% on the fingerboard, target that Eb on the change and you're in business. You can go deeper, and I do, but do that first. It's these smaller moves that open the door.
