Watch the SECTION 3: Sweetening the Arrangement online guitar lesson by Fareed Haque from Solo Guitar Handbook
Creating a full-fledged arrangement is a fine art and embraces an infinite number of possibilities and a life time of practice, experimentation, imagination, and love for the craft of jazz guitar. At the same time, it's just a gig. Common sense can cut through a lot of the BS and help you along your way. Don't put anything in your arrangement that doesn't need to be there, keep it simple, and just try for something that works. For an intro, try two or three different approaches. Always think about the song and the lyrics as a way to direct your creativity. See if there's some way to bring the lyrics or sentiment of the tune into your intro. If you bring something new into your arrangement, come back to it. Don't just use it and then go onto something else, but make sure that everything there is solid enough to be repeated, and that your arrangement makes sense.
