Watch the Sequencer online guitar lesson by Rory Ronde from Neo Soul Guitar Guidebook
One of my heroes in this style of music is the late legendary hip hop producer J Dilla. His music has made a lasting impression on my own style of playing. Many of the concepts I'm sharing find their way back to his approach to rhythm and music in general. He's known for a specific way of timing and influenced a whole generation of musicians with it.
If we want to create a guitar part suitable for this style, we have to dive in the domain of this thing called timing. This is perhaps the most important aspect, but also the hardest to explain, because it's an often very subtle and personal thing. The best way I can show you is by showing you how I look at it, by using a sequencing software where you can see a grid (usually divided in quarter, eighth, or sixteenth notes) and where musical elements (in this case a guitar track) are placed on that grid.
