Watch the The Beauty of Legato online guitar lesson by Allen Hinds from Melodic Improv

Let's touch on legato a little bit. For better or for worse, I've become associated with legato - and it's because of my shortcomings in alternate picking. I pick in an unusual way, and I ended up compensating for it with legato.

The beauty of legato is many-fold. Firstly, your dynamic range opens up more, allowing a softer touch. I haven't broken a string in 40 years on my guitar because my touch is so light. An exercise that can help you develop your legato technique is playing a scale, first time through picking all the notes. Then, take out some of the notes and play them legato. Eventually, you'll get to a point where you can play the whole scale legato. It requires quite a bit of left hand strength but is a really cool unique thing to develop.
