Watch the Strategy 6: Create Collections online guitar lesson by Jon Herington from Ear IQ: Soloing Strategies

Let's take a closer look at "I Hear They Shoot Horses". I tried to work with a "collection" of notes for this solo, but I also chose to break it up with the use of another collection of tones on the second section of the solo. The chords in the section really suggested this kind of approach, and I really insisted on it - I tried to hammer it home - to create a certain intense effect that I thought fit the song and its attitude.

In bar 11, that second section I was talking about starts. It's got the Eb7#9 chord, the "Purple Haze" chord down a half step, for two bars, then it moves up to the E7#9 for two bars. Then back down to the Eb, then it comes back to the Emi7 and returns to the flavor of the verse.
