I used the Boss RC-3 Looper for this course. It records high quality audio into a small footprint sized pedal at an affordable price. It's a great stereo looper with built-in drum grooves that can be tap tempo set. It also features a count-in mode and an auto start function to help you get your loops tight. Using it for vocals and guitar is also a cool function to consider.
I used various pedals in conjunction with the Boss RC3 Looper to create my sound palette: a Boss Tremolo, TC Electronic Flashback Delay, Jetter GS124 Overdrive, and a Dunlop Wah all fed into my Marshall JMP1 Preamp.
