Watch the Natural Harmonics online guitar lesson by Chris Buono from 60 Electric Guitar Techniques You MUST Know

Those chimey, bell-like tones you hear in countless tunes are called harmonics. The location of where you can play natural harmonics on the neck comes down to simple physics and math. Nerd factor aside, the actual technique is achieved by placing a fret hand finger lightly on top of the fret – not too light, but not too heavy either – and then taking your finger away after the strings are played.

Looking for inspiration? Like many techniques, my first impression came by way of Steve Howe of Yes, this time with the intro to "Roundabout" from the Fragile album. Another natural harmonics moment that stayed with me was the breakdown in U2's "I Will Follow" from Boy.
