Watch the Travis Picking online guitar lesson by Chris Buono from 60 Electric Guitar Techniques You MUST Know

In your pursuit of next level countrified lick and riff ideas, Travis picking will quickly find itself at the top of your list. With its simultaneous bass and melody lines, it's a full-sounding approach that provides a propulsive, fun vibe in the mix. When perfected, it sounds like two different parts being played at the same time. Throw a little analog tape slap back delay and you have a full-on Rockabilly vibe. Much like banjo rolls, you have a choice between playing apparatus: pick and fingers, thumb pick/finger pick, or even just fingers. Whatever you choose, your downbeat bass line must be tight and consistent while your top note melody sits in the pocket and effectively chimes away.

Looking for inspiration? Start with the man himself: Merle Travis, and then go right to Chet Atkins, and then to our own Tommy Emmanuel. If you can pick your jaw up off the floor, you can proceed from there to the acoustic guys who employ a similar techniques such as Piedmont or Kentucky thumbpicking.
