Watch the Harmonic Minor: Level 1 online guitar lesson by Chris Buono from Guitar Gym: Triad Chord Scales - Harmonic Minor

The final Level 1 Workout Group is played on the 5-4-3 string set. Workout #3A starts with a root position C minor triad. The first two bars will play through Cycle 2 to the next Cm chord type as dictated by Cycle 2 voice leading - in this case Cm/G. From the Cm/G the chord scale will be played in reverse thus producing Cycle 7 returning you to the starting root position C minor triad in the next two bars completing the first half of the Workout. The second half starts on the same root position Cm and plays through Cycle 7 to the next Cm chord type as dictated by Cycle 7 voice leading - in this case Cm/Eb. From the Cm/Eb the chord scale will be played in reverse thus producing Cycle 2 once again returning you to the starting root position C minor triad completing the Workout.

Workout #3B starts with a Cm/Eb in Cycle 2 that makes its way to a root position C minor triad and then reverses the chord scale in Cycle 7 in the first two bars. The last two bars start on the same Cm/Eb and play through Cycle 7 to Cm/G and then return to Cm/Eb in Cycle 2.

Workout #3C starts with a Cm/G in Cycle 2 that makes its way to Cm/Eb and then reverses the chord scale in Cycle 7 in the first two bars. The last two bars start on the same Cm/G and play through Cycle 7 to a root position C minor triad and then return to Cm/G in Cycle 2.

The final Workout #3D is where it all comes together. Starting once again with a root position C minor triad you'll play a non-stop Cycle 2 through all 21 possible chords in the first three bars. That means you're playing all three versions of each chord (root position, 1st inversion and 2nd inversion) in a heptatonic-based chord scale - pretty cool, right?! Even better is in the next three bars you'll do it again in reverse playing a non-stop Cycle 7 through all 21 possible chords.

As you play through all four Workouts watch for both Cycle 2 and Cycle 7 voice leading patterns. They are:

Cycle 2 = Root position - 2nd inversion - 1st inversion - root position, etc.
Cycle 7 = Root position - 1st inversion - 2nd inversion - root position, etc.

Taking your observation to the next level watch for the each Cycle's voice or melodic strand pattern:

Cycle 2 = Root - 5th - 3rd - root, etc.
Cycle 7 = Root - 3rd - 5th - root, etc.

Take note: Cycle 2 descends pitch-wise, but ascends in chord order justifying Chordal Gravity.
