Watch the Mean Combo online guitar lesson by TrueFire from Rock Guitar Greatest Hits Vol. 1

Lesson Source: Angus Clark's Hard Rock Survival Guide: Rhythm

Again we're combining a lot of concepts here and the results should be sounding kind-a funky. This is a riff-based rhythm part that starts with some great 4ths, then some tasty single note syncopated stuff, including hammer-ons (with right hand mutes), and some pinch harmonics. One thing to take note of here is that we're working in F#, and just like with E or G, the guitar offers up certain things to you and you should take advantage of them. Like using the open E and A strings to hammer onto notes in the pentatonic scale. And then on the high strings you have the open B and E strings that act as color tones against an F# major shape (it's a Dom 7 add 11 I think - but I only have a master's degree in music, you might want to ask someone that has a PHD or went to a conservatory, they'll be happy to tell you all about it at length and make sure you're duly impressed with it all). The right hand picking during the single note riff section involves string skipping, so precision is necessary, but you need to stay aggressive with the pick as well. As I said, there's a lot going on, so the time spent on the concepts and with the metronome will pay off here.
