Like the preceding lesson, NYC Shuffle, Storm Riders rhythm part is also based on triad substitution. In this case though, the result is primarily minor. For example, by playing E minor, F# minor, and G triads over an E minor to A major bass line in measures 1 and 2, a cool jazzy E minor7 A6 sound is achieved. However, because it's played with a straight eighth feel (even eighth notes) it feels more like Blues-Rock than Jazz.
As mentioned in the NYC Shuffle intro, Pat Martino's opening rhythm vamp on his version of Coltrane's, Impressions is a good example of this approach to jazz oriented minor tonalities. However, as you'll see in the lesson that follows, it works fine with Blues-Rock as well.
The solos here are varied, and employ both high and low string octave lines, as well as open string drones. Based on the dorian mode, they offer a jazz-like alternative to the more common pentatonic minor approach. Although of course, it's great to mix the two as you see fit.
