Watch the G Dominant 7 R&B Jam online guitar lesson by TrueFire from Lead Guitar Greatest Hits Vol. 1

Lesson Source: Frank Vignola's Vamps, Jams & Improvisation

In this G7 jam solo section we'll discuss the G mixolydian scale which is simply the C major scale starting and ending on a G note. Using rhythmic alteration we'll learn how to turn a simple scale into musical ideas or lines.
We also start to look at the fingerboard horizontally, which is a very productive way to stimulate new melodic ideas out of your comfort zone. We start applying the Blues scale to a dominant chord jam mixing these scales while keeping their tonal centers in mind. I also introduce what I call the G7(b9) scale, which is simply the C Harmonic Minor scale starting and ending on G - a very cool, middle-eastern sounding scale.
