My approach to this solo was to enhance the mood of the progression with melodic ideas that had a similar feel. The aeolian soloing has a feeling of sadness or mystery to it and I wanted my single notes to cry out over the chords.
I target tones of the E minor 9 chord for my resolutions and also for my melodic phrases. Don't think for one minute chord tones are just for resolutions!
The great thing about this progression is that the F# is the 9th of the E minor 9 chord and also the #11 of the C 5/2 (#11) and the 3rd of the D chord. This gives us a common tone that can't possibly sound bad against any part of this progression. How cool is that!
I'd like you to improvise a solo and record it. You can use your phone for this, you don't need anything more. Review your takes and make notes of what you did and didn't like. Piece together the licks and phrases you like to create your own solo section.
