Duke Ellington said it all with the title of his tune: "It Don't Mean A Thing If It Ain't Got That Swing." Developing a strong swing feel is crucial to speaking the language of jazz fluently. Without swing, it's just a bunch of notes. This is a discussion on my ideas about what really swings. Swing is a living entity and has a forward moving pulse. Being able to place the accents in different places in the beat is what gives swing life. Practice improvising on a 2nd line rhythmic grooves to learn to feel where the various accents sit. Listening to the greats and transcribing are perfect avenues for deepening your swing feel.
