Watch the Duane Allman Style 1: Open E online guitar lesson by TrueFire from Blues Guitar Greatest Hits Vol. 1

Lesson Source: Andy Aledort's Slide Guitar Power

Duane Allman always used an open E tuning when he played slide, with the exception of two songs, "Dreams" and "Mountain Jam," for which he played slide in standard tuning. Somewhat unusual at the time was that Duane would use an open E tuning regardless of the key the song was in; great examples are "Don't Keep Me Wonderin'," which is in G, "Trouble No More" and "One Way Out," which are both in A, and "Statesboro Blues," which the Allman Brothers would play in the key of D. In this performance, I emulate Duane's soloing on "Statesboro Blues," focusing on movement between 8th and 10th position throughout the solo, with a few brief moments up in 13th position.
