Many of the pioneering electric guitarists borrowed licks from horn players. Now they could finally be heard and weren’t limited to playing rhythm in the background anymore. In the late 30s and early 40s Charlie Christian who hailed from Oklahoma and the western swing players in the neighbor state of Texas had a lot in common: the use of single note runs and arpeggios combined with added chromatics for example.
