Watch the The Genius Variations online guitar lesson by TrueFire from Jazz Guitar Greatest Hits - Vol. 4

The Genius Variations is a video guitar lesson presented by David Hamburger and is sourced from Blues Alchemy: Post-War

As you listen to musicians like Charles who draw equally on blues and jazz influences, pay attention to how much blues vocabulary you hear going by in the solos. Saxophone and piano solos can sound impossibly complicated simply because, unlike guitar solos, there are no familiar sounding scale patterns, open position moves, or double-stops to for your ear to grab onto. But if you listen a little closer you can usually start hearing familiar minor pentatonic or blues scale licks going by, often when the changes are resolving back to the I chord.
