Watch the My Mellifluous Stacy online guitar lesson by Chris Buono from 30 Funk Rhythms You MUST Know

Throughout the course, we've seen many different approaches to funk rhythm guitar. Varying styles, tempo ranges, techniques, harmonies and more. For this final rhythm, I leave you with a 12-bar feel-good jam in F dedicated to the Mrs. It makes use of phrasing techniques pioneered by one of the funkiest players ever: Curtis Mayfield. Pay close attention to the grace note phrasings in the form of double-stop hammer-ons and slides as well as double-stop bends and sliding perfect fourth dyads.

I followed a playing and compositional approach of a certain Texan who made no bones about an influence he aspired to throughout his career, that, by the way, found inspiration in the above-named archetype of this style. The Texan is none other than Eric Johnson, and, well, we all know whom the lefty, Strat-wielding legend is that he pays respects to every time he picks up his own Strat.

Keep the funk alive!
