Watch the The 55 online guitar lesson by Chris Buono from 30 Funk Rhythms You MUST Know
"The 55" is based on a section from the syncopated tour-de-force Wayne Krantz
lays down in a tune called "Whippersnapper" from his legendary live record Two Drink Minimum
recorded at The 55 Bar
in the West Village section of NYC. If I had to choose one piece of music that defines what deep pocket means, this would be it. It was this record that would introduce me to the power of the 2nd and 4th 16th note syncopations that I rely so heavily on in every aspect of my playing.
All the chords are hybrid picked, which is another thing I picked up from Wayne and ran with. The feel of the first two bars may look simple on paper, but played over what's happening in the rhythm section is another thing entirely. Steve tears through the Lincoln Goines-inspired run, giving you a solid foundation to lock in with, but one that's not without a challenge. Speaking of, you'll do just that in Bars 3 & 4 with the low range riffage on the bottom two strings. Feel free to use this as a benchmark for where your high-level pocket playing is. If you can lock in with this, you're doing good!
