Watch the Buttah online guitar lesson by Chris Buono from 30 Funk Rhythms You MUST Know
A common mistake players make when starting to play funk is hitting the pedal to the metal when it comes to tempo. The truth is, funk can be played in a wide range of tempos. That said, there's a certain vibe at the 70-85 bpm range that just grooves and that's exactly what "Buttah" was designed to show you.
Set in a 12-bar Cm blues, "Buttah" follows B.B. King's classic "The Thrill is Gone" changes. Using a go-to m9 voicing on the tonic chord as well as a cool closed voiced m7 on the iv-7, you'll bounce from chord to single note playing through Bars 1-8 and 11-12. Be aware of the subtle use of scratches and palm punches and put the time in to nail those descending G7alt chords. Your jam session partners will love you for it!
