Watch the Side Step online guitar lesson by Chris Buono from 30 Funk Rhythms You MUST Know

Rhythm 16's name refers to what happens in the final beat of the second bar of this two-bar rhythm. First, let's examine what leads up to it. "Side Step" works off two chords – Am/C & C(9) – that are the "call" and a single note pentatonic line that serves as the "response." Notice the lines are identical, yet displaced rhythmically. In the first bar, the line starts on the upbeat of beat 2, however in the second bar, it's right on the downbeat directly following the C(9). As you navigate these simple, yet challenging aspects of the rhythm, you have a sneaky unison bend waiting for you on the second 16th of beat 4. If it trips you up at first, that's OK. It was meant to feel like someone stepped aside and stuck their foot out!
