Watch the Rise online guitar lesson by Chris Buono from 30 Funk Rhythms You MUST Know

Eight bars of Gm goodness are what "Rise" is all about. Along with playing ping-pong with the harmony and single note playing, you have strategic staccato playing on the syncopated triplet instances that both outline the chords that kick off each two-bar segment as well as the ones following. Also notice the ascending line cliché in the chords on the fifth string starting with the 5th fret D in Bar 1. This continues with the 6th fret Eb in Bar 3 and then the 7th fret E in Bar 5. I throw a compositional curve ball with a concept called octave displacement in Bar 7 where I throw the expected F up on octave. Line clichés are cool, but even cooler when you can pull them off without sounding, well, cliché.
