Watch the Weekly Workout #9 online guitar lesson by Chris Buono from Guitar Gym Weekly Workouts: Vol. 2

Volume 2 kicks off with a Weekly Workout dealing with odd time feel! Odd time is not something that should not be feared. In fact, odd time feels are a lot of fun to study and play. Seriously, if you can play in "4" you can play in anything with practice.

This Workout is split in three parts. Each two-bar line is in an odd time signature starting with 3/4 followed by 5/4 and 7/4. The key is to grab onto the 3/4 riff because that "rhythmic riff"  or, better yet, ostinato, is the backbone of the next two. Using ostinatos is a great way to learn how to play in odd times as well as other feels. The three riffs are all based off comp feels I use over Dave Brubeck's "Take "Five."

For the gear heads wondering where you can find out more about the guitar in this video: Downes Guitars. These are amazing hand-built instruments built in Portland, Oregon. And, yes, this is from the same builder that made the orange guitar you see in 60 Electric Guitar Techniques You MUST Know and all over 30 Funk Rhythms You MUST Know, including the cover. As for the metronome app I mention: Time Guru.

Have fun with it!
