Watch the Improvising over a Jam Track Shape 5 Demonstration online guitar lesson by Rob Garland from Melodic Soloing: Major Scale
Here I'm improvising using Shape 5 in the key of C, playing over the funky jam track. The chords are: Cmaj7-Fmaj7-Am7-Fmaj7-Am7-Fmaj7-Dm7-G7.
I'm taking a rhythmic approach to the major 7th chord jam, improvising with Shape 5. Short phrases with rhythmic stabs can be an interesting way to build a solo. I’m also using bends within the shape to increase the drama of the solo. Jumping around rather than just ascending or descending all the time and combining that idea with rhythm can lead to inspiration.
