Watch the The 5 Pentatonic Shapes Overview online guitar lesson by Rob Garland from Melodic Soloing: Major Scale
You can find both the major and minor pentatonic scale within the major scale, it’s the same 5 shapes minus 2 notes.
I tend to primarily think in terms of the relative minor pentatonic which gives you a blues rock type of sound. But those same notes also form the major pentatonic which yields more of a Southern rock/country style.
So how does the pentatonic scale fit into the major scale? First the 6th note of the major scale gives us the relative minor and the Shape 6 contains the minor pentatonic shape you know and love. I’ll play through the 5 A minor pentatonic shapes and show you how they connect with the 5 C major scale shapes.
