Watch the Week 5: Vertical Rolling Shifts Ex.1-7 online guitar lesson by Derryl Gabel from Fretboard Intensive Training

Here's an explanation and overview of the Vertical Rolling Shift exercise, which is designed to help you see the scale patterns vertically. This also contains exercises 1 - 7, which are the basic scale fragments used for our Vertical Rolling Shifts idea. These scale fragments are 6 note groupings taken from each modal pattern from the C major scale. Take note of the geometric patterns created. These same patterns are repeated in the same order just starting on a different note on each group of strings. The patterns are slightly different on the G and B string group because of the tuning. To compensate, just remember that the pattern on the B string will be up a fret. Proceed to the next video for examples 8-13.
