Watch the Study 1: Crusty Doughboy online guitar lesson by Jason Loughlin from Focus On: Western Swing
For our first study we are going to check out western swing tunes with the strongest ties to the Appalachian music. Our rhythm is based on carter type strum with bass fills. These tunes are driven by a fiddle sometimes two up top, verse and a refrain. Who ever is playing the hook at the top of the form doesn't change or embellish at all. If you do solo over one of these tunes you don't want to get too far away from the melody. I'll play three choruses. First, I'll establish the melody in it's simplest form then I'll add all the melodic embellishments we talked about in our concepts section including some classic fiddle ornamentation. Finally, I'll reharmonize the melody. I urge you to learn this simple melody and try your own embellishments.
